Director’s Note
I saw the world premiere of As You Like It: A Radical Retelling by Cliff Cardinal at Crow's Theatre in September 2021. It was the first show I had seen since March of 2020, and everything that happened in the world between those two dates. It was the first show I had seen since becoming a parent. And, while on the way to the theatre, I got the call that GCTC was hiring me as Artistic Director. Since that night in September, this production has been reverberating in me, and feels like a demarcation of a new era in my life.
On a collective note, it was the first tentative and longed for gathering of community after 18 months in seclusion, and it was electric. Cliff Cardinal gathers us around Shakespeare’s As You Like It to delve into what we owe each other. It is a show that invites us into relationship.
I am so happy to be sharing this production with you.
Sarah
