CCLA/GCTC Lawyer Play 2024:
As You Like It
by William Shakespeare
directed by Geoff McBride
April 30 - May 3, 2025
Romance, disguises, wrestling, music, and a lion! – just some of the ingredients that make up the madcap world of Shakespeare’s “As You Like It”. All performed for your delight by members of the Carleton County Law Association as a fundraiser for GCTC and Cornerstone Housing for Women.
Rosalind and Orlando meet at a wrestling match and are immediately smitten with each other. He is a poor farm boy and she is an exiled princess. Torn apart by the whims of the Evil Duke Frederick they are both banished – unbeknownst to each other - to the forest of Arden. In this idyllic and Golden World they meet again, but Rosalind, to protect her identity, is in disguise as the shepherd boy Ganymede.
When she learns that Orlando is still desperately in love with Rosalind, she hatches a plan to keep his attention and admiration. But O! What tangled webs are weaved when other characters' romantic entanglements get tangled in her plans! Will she keep the love of Orlando? Will her own lovesickness annoy the heck out of her best friend Celia? Will she be able to run a sheep farm? Will the Shepherdess who fell in love with her disguise derail Rosalind’s plans? Will she be reunited with her father who is also hiding in the forest of Arden? And why is there a lion?
To find out the answers to all these dramatic dilemmas, get your tickets to this year’s GCTC Lawyer Play!
About the Preview Performance
Previews are public performances before the official opening to allow the director, design team, cast, and crew to make small adjustments to the show that weren't found during rehearsals before the gala performances.
What is the Lawyer Play?
The Lawyer Play is a major annual special event fundraiser that GCTC has been conducting for 25 years in partnership with the Carleton County Law Association. Each year, a volunteer cast of local lawyers and legal professionals take the stage in a show produced by GCTC. The event is a significant fundraiser for GCTC, and each year also supports a charity partner, chosen by the lawyers involved.
This year the fundraiser will also support Cornerstone Housing for Women. Cornerstone Housing for Women is the largest women-only shelter and housing provider for women experiencing homelessness in Ottawa. Each year, more than 1,300 women experience homelessness in the city. Through their four housing residences, emergency shelter, and outreach program, they strive every day to fill the gap in our city by offering women-centered, women-only programs and services to all women and gender-diverse individuals, with dignity and without judgment.
