Democracy

by John Murrell

directed by Courtney Ch’ng Lancaster

Jan 31 - Feb 14, 2021 on Tarragon Acoustic

In the midst of the American Civil War, Walt Whitman and Ralph Waldo Emerson discuss the past, the future, life, love and what it means to be human.

“Even the simplest lines have a quiet eloquence…soft explosions of the heart.” — Quill & Quire

Democracy received the Canadian Authors Association’s and the Writers Guild of Alberta’s Best Play Awards in 1992. John Murrell was the playwright-in-residence with Alberta Theatre Projects from 1975 to 1976, associate director of the Stratford Festival from 1977 to 1978, and head of the Banff Centre School of Fine Arts Playwrights Colony in 1986.

Democracy was first produced at Tarragon in February 1992.
