Content Note for The Supine Cobbler
What is the world of the show? What is the vibe?
This play harnesses the traditionally male genre of the Western and playfully turns that world on its head, populating it with a cast of outlaw and renegade women. In the Western genre, life and death are unsentimental. Wilderness is interior and exterior, survival and one-upmanship are supreme, and friendships are everything.
In this tale, the women are outlaws because they dare to take their bodily autonomy into their own hands, regardless of societal permissions. This includes: terminating a pregnancy, solo parenting, dying by suicide, having sex outside of a relationship, betraying a friend, and providing abortion care. The abortion is the central action of the show pursued by the central character, and it is neither gruesome nor tragic. Its noteworthiness is its ordinariness.
The play is animated by humour, playfulness, memory, badassery, and female friendship.
