The COVID-19 crisis has been deeply disruptive and, in some cases, tragic for communities, businesses, families and individuals throughout Canada and the world. The emergency measures have been extremely important for controlling the spread of the virus and ensuring that our health care services are not overwhelmed. At the same time, we recognize the devastating personal and financial losses and real hardships that people are suffering. This is an unprecedented and challenging time for everyone.

One of our great joys each year is contributing to the annual CCLA-GCTC Lawyer Play fundraiser. Not only does it provide important support for the GCTC and a local Ottawa charity partner, but it also represents a cherished collegial event for Ottawa’s legal community. It is a unique opportunity for judges, lawyers, paralegals, and articling students of all vintages and specializations to work together with the stage professionals in the Ottawa theatre community to create a polished ensemble performance. It is no exaggeration to say that the experience is magical for both the contributors and the audiences—and it is greatly missed this year. This evening would have been the opening night for the gala performances of this year’s show, The Sting.

While it has been impossible for the show to go on this year, we look forward to working with the GCTC, our sponsors, and our charity partner—Roger Neilson House—to perform the show in 2021. Until then, we continue in solidarity with our friends and communities in Ottawa, Canada and throughout the world in navigating the COVID-19 crisis as best we can and looking ahead to brighter days.
